But I like the way it allows us to remember movie history (especially in years when the contemporary films might feel lacking), and honestly I'm sometimes reminded of folks I'd forgotten.

When I can see the screens, that is.

It was great to see Widmark, and Manny Farber. It would've been nice to better see the Cyd Charisse clips. And I had forgotten (until I read it on another blog) that they forgot to include McGoohan's passing. But then, your Cinebeats obit was the definitive one, anyway. Off to read your life twittering of the ceremony!Brian Doanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17903729233401672600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4883634507539657866.post-76645108458941115612009-02-23T20:20:00.001-05:002009-02-23T20:20:00.001-05:00As far as I know (from what's implied in his blog ...As far as I know (from what's implied in his blog piece today), he watched at home. So, yes, he must have a magic TV or something. Like Masahiro Motoki being on stage.

The "tribute to the dead" montage was done really poorly, but I've been seeing the one playing on TCM for so long that I'm sort of over the "dead actor montage" thing I guess. Plus, ever since Brando died and the Oscars didn't do him justice, I've been weary of their "dead montages." But I'm a sensitive fool so I still get weepy. Last night it was Richard Widmark's moment that got to me. Maybe because I could actually see him?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4883634507539657866.post-67347910420528647692009-02-23T20:04:00.000-05:002009-02-23T20:04:00.000-05:00Was Ebert backstage, or watching it at home? I was kind of stunned when I read Ebert after the ceremony last night, and he said it was one of the best he'd ever seen. Love his criticism, but I felt like we were watching two different shows.Brian Doanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17903729233401672600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4883634507539657866.post-46907528284943337512009-02-23T14:13:00.000-05:002009-02-23T14:13:00.000-05:00Larry, you hit it on the head. The fact that the producers and director of the show did not realize that moving the camera around during the in memorium segment meant you couldn't see it(!) signals that they never, ever should or need to work in television again. I was actually kind of angry when that segment ended, so robbed I felt by what had just happened.Greghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05730146625671701859noreply@blogger.com
