Postcard From Cineville

Sitting in The Feve, wolfing down a quick late lunch before going to a haircut appointment up the street. A table of middle-aged Cinevillians (as well as one Gen Y ringer) are holding court at the large table in front of the picture window. The grey-haired man, who looks like a heavier David Lynch, rails against online culture, the dangers of blogs and chat rooms, Facebook and MySpace ("I've never been on Facebook, don't wanna!," he rumbles like a less empathetic Tom Poston). "People spend three or four hours a day on that thing, spend their whole lives on it!," he says. He's been in The Feve for awhile, engaging in those crucially productive activities of drinking and bloviating, having his opinions confirmed by an echo chamber of like souls. Yes, yes-- very different from being in a chat room. He dismisses reality TV, but confesses a lingering affection for ER.

In a word, "exactly."

Wry commentary pointing out the telling lack of self-awareness of the puffed-up, but misplacedly well-meaning nimrods of a small-town? Jane Austen would heartily approve!

It's a truth universally acknowledged that comparisons to Jane Austen are a welcome treat-- thanks!

Jonathan-- yeah, I thought it was a funny irony, too.

Hope your super bowl sunday is a good one tomorrow, and eli is left feeling as punch-drunk and discombobulated as that guy next to me at the feve yesterday.
