Good or Bad Idea?

I love Jake Gyllenhaal in comedy, drama and adventure films, but this casting makes me scratch my head a little. I think he'll get the humor and vulnerability of the man, but wonder about how convincing he'll be as a 60s football player. On the other hand, better him than Freddie Prinze, Jr. or Adam Sandler.

What think you all?

They're making a Namath movie? I had no idea. Actually, I think Jake Gyllenhaal is a good choice to play Namath even if he doesn't look that much like him. Of course, quarterbacks are usually 6'2" and up (Namath was 6'2") and actors are notoriously short so physically he might not cut it and Namath had a good spiral so he'd have to get that too. Probably his biggest challenge will be getting the Namath drunken "I wanna kiss you" slur down just right. Oh god, I do hope they put that in the movie.

Yeah, it's the physical size issue I was wondering about, too-- I don't know how big Jake actually is, but he always seems smaller onscreen. I have to say though, the more I thought about it after posting, the more I like the idea of him playing Namath, who is a fascinating subject-- talented, emotionally messed up-- for a film.

Yes! The big question is, who will play Suzy?

Hm. I'm far more interested in the prospect of Gyllenhaal playing Namath than in the Namath movie itself. I saw Broadway ["broad" indeed] Joe on The Brady Bunch. I've seen the pantyhose commercial. I saw the SNL sketch in which they tried to transplant his brain into his knee, or something. I'm pretty much good where Joe's concerned. (I do think he and Terry Bradshaw ought to get together to go lookin' for chicks.) What's next, a John Madden biopic (Ace on a Bus? Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman!) with commericals for He Bought the Company: The Victor Kiam Story?

I do think the prospective movie should end with a crawl about the Kolber incident and the copy, "To her great credit, Suzy Kolber did not poke him in the forehead and knock his cheesy, drunk ass over."

Actually, I'm kind of hoping for Heart of Glass: The Bill Parcells Story, with somnabulant Bill played by the equally somnabulent Fred Thompson. And perhaps Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Terrell Owens, since he wittily (and THERE'S a word we don't use with Gooding much anymore) predicted the Owens phenomenon in his Jerry Maguire performance. Noted thespian Terrance "Failure to Laugh, Relative Chaos" Bradshaw would play himself, of course, and Fred Willard would play Bill Belichick.

Ooh. That, due to current standards, would make Terry Bradshaw eligible for his own episode of Inside the Actors Studio. Noooo!

In other news, I saw a call-in question about Spurrier going to LSU on some TV show. Can anyone bear that level of insufferability?

And leave the Gamecocks? My Gamecocks? He can't leave. Without him we don't stand a... wait a minute. Before him we were sucky to mediocre, and with him we've been sucky to mediocre. Oh who gives a damn, I never liked that jerk anyway. Let's face it, it doesn't matter who's coaching us - we suck.

Yeah, I think it was just wishful thinking on the part of the caller, "A.O. in Baton Rouge," but the prospect makes me shudder. For one thing, the Red Stick City needs a few more years to nurse that grudge against Saban.

You'd think that with a mascot like the 'Cocks things would always be looking up. Hang in there, SC fans!

Oh, I don't know-- at least Spurrier won't leave them with a raft of NCAA violations, the way that Keebler elf, Lou Holtz, did.

Lou Holtz: Pequeno Keeblero. :)
